GRIMSBY Town forward Peter Bore says the battle for first-team places at Blundell Park will raise the level of performance from the Mariners.

Bore returned to action from the bench in the win at Torquay United last weekend – one of three first-teamers back in the squad after injury alongside Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Nick Hegarty.

And with suspended duo Barry Conlon and Adam Proudlock back available for Saturday's visit of bottom-club Darlington, and Nathan Jarman and keeper Nick Colgan also returning from injury, the ranks are swelling again for boss Mike Newell.

All those outfield players started for the Reserves yesterday in their 4-2 defeat at Blundell Park to Rotherham in the Totesport.com League, with Conlon, and Michael Leary with a 25-yard screamer, getting on the scoresheet.

It means that, for the first time in an injury-hit start to the campaign, there is now a real contest for a starting berth.

That is something Bore, who has yet to start a game this campaign, is keen to be in the thick of after his cameo appearance in Devon capped a week in which he also bagged a brace for the second-string.

The home-grown frontman said: "I'd been out with a couple of hamstring injuries in the last few weeks but I had a good return to full training and then got a run-out for the Reserves last week.

"I was pleased with how training went and then got a couple of goals for the Reserves so to get on at Torquay was a good end to the week for me.

"It's given me a lot of confidence to fight for a place now. I have to knuckle down and keep working.

UNEMPLOYED people in North East Lincolnshire have been given an extra boost in their search for new jobs.

A major jobs fair, organised by the Grimsby Telegraph, was held at Grimsby Town Hall yesterday to promote recruitment and training – and help the area Bounce Back.

The annual event saw major employers across all areas join up with training organisations and advice agencies to help those out of work find a new job.

Employers including Marks & Spencer, Argos and Willow Home Care had stalls at the event, all trying to recruit extra staff in time for the busy Christmas period.

The Territorial Army, the Prince's Trust and St John's Ambulance were also on hand to advise job hunters about the benefits of volunteering.

FREEMAN Street's Regal Cinema has closed its doors once more – just one month after its grand reopening.

As reported, the former Odeon Cinema was renovated and reopened on August 7 by Shropshire businessman Trevor Harris and his son Anthony – eight years after the last film was shown there in 2001.

But now, the venture has been halted, with the Harrises claiming they had faced "problem after problem".

Trevor, 70, who has operated cinemas across the country, said he had to battle flooding, damp and problems with the sewers – leaving him thousands of pounds out of pocket, though he would not confirm the exact amount.

He said: "When I negotiated the lease on the property, I was told everything was working and in good condition.

COMPLAINTS against Humberside Police have risen by 12 per cent this year, official figures show.

Members of the public made 437 complaints about the force in 2008-09, with the most common allegations being that officers either failed to do their jobs or were rude.

About 21 per cent of allegations were formally investigated and, of those, only nine per cent were proven.

The rest were either withdrawn or dealt with by an explanation or apology.

Nicholas Long, the Independent Police Complaints Commission’s commissioner for Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "Public concerns continue to centre around perceptions that police officers are not doing their jobs effectively or are impolite when speaking to the public.
